Camping: Dispersed camping is permitted in some areas, but a (free) backcountry permit is required. Permit boxes are at camping areas. Leave no trace rules are required.
Biking: Bicycles are only allowed on designated public roads.
Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV):
These are not allowed on trails or as cross country travel. Use of Public roads are permitted.

Alton Amphitheater Route
This route runs through the Grand Staircase area from Highway 89 near Alton. The route is 35 miles long.
Skutumpah Road: Leaving Zion National Park from the east side the highway meets at Mount Carmel Junction and continues north to Glendale. Here is the Glendale entrance into the Grand Staircase. Caution: The road can be impassible when wet. Do not travel this road in the winter. This backway travels from Glendale to Cannonville. The route is 34 miles long. Attractions along the route include Lick Wash, Willis Creek, Bull Valley Gorge.
Johnson Canyon Road: This is the entrance if you are near Kanab. The 24 mile road is paved until it meets up with Skutumpah. The old Gunsmoke Movie Set is along this road.
Cottonwood Canyon Road: This road is located 32 miles east of Kanab. It travels from Big water to Cannonville. The route is 32 miles long. Grosvenor Arch, Hackberry Wash and Cottonwood Narrows are the main attractions on this road. The Paria Movie set was here, but it was burned down by vandals in 2006.
Dirt roads can be impassible if wet. There are no services in the monument so be prepared with food, water and emergency equipment. |

Nature Notes Plan on at least 1 gallon of water per person each day. You will need water for drinking, washing and cooking. Remember water can be contaminated by many sources such as horses, cattle, wild animals and other humans. Giardia lamblia is released into water and soil as feces decompose. If you ingest the bacterium you may not notice symptoms right away, but you will and they are usually severe until treated with antibiotics.
